Fridays Off the 405
Monsters Are Waiting
Justin Warfield & DJ Adam 12

Date: Friday, August 29, 2008
Time: 6:00–9:00 p.m.
Location: Getty Center, Museum Courtyard
Admission: Free; no reservations required.

Enjoy music and evening views of the city, tour the galleries, and revel in the end of the workweek in a casual and spontaneous atmosphere at this musical happening curated by culture magazine Flavorpill. Fridays Off the 405 features free live music and a cash bar (open until 8:30 p.m.).

See stone come to life in Bernini and the Birth of Baroque Portrait Sculpture (August 5—October 26) and grab your last chance for the art of things that crawl in Maria Sibylla Merian & Daughters: Women of Art and Science (closing August 31). The galleries will be open throughout the night.

Don't miss it—August 29 is our last Friday performance before we move to Saturdays starting in the spring.

August 29, 2008: Monsters Are Waiting and Justin Warfield & Adam 12
Monsters Are Waiting—Annalee Fery (vocals/keyboard) and Andrew Clark (bass/guitar)—offer up sultry, hypnotic haunt-rock that ranges from mellow to frenetic, gloomy to incendiary. Named "a band you ought to know" by the L.A. Times, the Echo Park outfit combines Fery's angelic, slightly smoky vocals (think early Liz Phair with platinum Debbie Harry highlights) with Clark's flawless, seductive guitar to create "moody musical parfait layered with shoegazer drift-offs, indie-style scruff, Cure-esque love pangs and synth pop's gloomy allure," riffs the San Francisco Chronicle.

Opening the night with an equally Cure-esque vibe is a DJ set from Justin Warfield & Adam 12 of She Wants Revenge, who mine the depths of the SF Valley to create a soundtrack for the dark and debaucherous. Playing to "scorned lovers, bored housewives, jaded hipsters, gender-benders, and club-kids" (and any combo thereof), they spin tales of betrayal, lies, and deceit set to a catchy and infectious beat.

Coming Next Year: Saturday Music!
Fridays Off the 405 will end with the event on August 29, 2008, but will be back this spring with exciting new music and programming. Check our event calendar beginning early 2009 for details

Snoop Doggy Dogg - “Over The Counter” unreleased album from 1991! (free download)

Yo! So, we have been feeding y’all some real goodness lately. F’realdoe. The blog has been full of that juicy goodness and this is another amazing find.

This is Snoop Dogg’s “real” debut album. This album was released in 1991, two years before Doggystyle. It was never even pressed onto CD. This is that raw Doggy dog shhh. The quality isn’t great and the production is certainly not Dre, but it’s great to hear Snoop in his real early days. It’s amazing really that almost 20 years later, we can hear what an artist like Snoop sounded like before he was even really “discovered.” You can ask yourself, “would you have signed this guy or thought that he would have turned into the icon/legend he is today?”

Here is my favorite so far:

Omer Saar - “THE GREEN ALBUM” (free download)

Here it is world. My first release. I hope it becomes the soundtrack for your summer. That was always the intention. Nothing would make me happier than people listening to this 5, 10, 20 years down the line and remembering the Summer of ‘08.

There are AT LEAST 6 more tracks that will be leaked one by one over the next few months, so stay tuned!

FREE DOWNLOAD: THE GREEN ALBUM (produced by Omer Saar).zip (sendspace)

or THE GREEN ALBUM (produced by Omer Saar).zip (megaupload)

or THE GREEN ALBUM (produced by Omer Saar) (sharebee)

Please remember that I’m giving this album away for free with an encouraged and much appreciated donation to STAY TRUE, a non-profit my dear and cool as Iceberg Slim brother, Nir Saar, started in Philadelphia. I strongly encourage you to check out what he is doing via the website link above and get involved in any way you see fit.

Al Green has long-been my favorite artist of all time along with Bob Marley. I’ve been listening to his music for years and I love it as much today as ever.

About 4 years ago, I was laying on my brother’s porch in Ann Arbor, MI after a long night of partying. Everyone was already asleep and I just put on Al Green’s Greatest Hits. I’m layin’ there thinking I could probably make a beat out of every single one of these songs.

So I did.

I knocked out 15 or so songs in less than 2 months. This was around March/April of 2005. I remember visiting my brother around my birthday and thinking that a year from “now” I want to drop the album on my birthday, so the world has it for the Summer.

Well… it’s a couple years late, but it’s all happening thanks to Al Green & ?uestlove making “Lay It Down”, and releasing it ON MY BIRTHDAY! I mean, what kind of “coincidence” is that? That’s the kind of magic life occasionally blesses us with, if we are conscious enuff to recognize it. That “sign” was all I needed to get back to finishing this project.

In the last 2 weeks, I’ve produced 7 new songs for the album! After 3 years of not doing anything with it. Crazy huh?

Another AWESOME alignment with the universe was meeting Tony “T. MONEY GREEN“, who started playing bass with The Dramatics (one of my all-time favorite soul groups) at the age of 17! Then, he went on to play with George Clinton, writing and playing songs with that crew, and later did a bunch of work with Dr. Dre, Snoop and many others. Check that link for more on T. MONEY GREEN! Now, I hope you see where this is going…

I wanted to add some depth to a few of these songs with some new bass-lines. So, you guessed it, the legend T. MONEY GREEN laced a bunch of these songs with bass-lines with the help of my good friend and exceptional musician himself Miko. Miko works at a really nice studio in Birmingham, MI where he engineered that recording of Mr. Green. We all sat there while I played one song after another of THE GREEN ALBUM and we’d decide whether we should touch it or not. Then MONEY would do his thing. Miko actually helped a lot with the tuning. It was tough since there had been pitch changes to the original Al Green songs. Then I added my two cents here and there on how I wanted the bass-line to ride… mostly MONEY did what he does best. Aside from Mr. GREEN being a super dope bass player, his last name is GREEN if you haven’t noticed. Well… nuff said.

Support T-MONEY any way you can. I wish I could send him some money from the album, but there is NON being profited. I put a lot of time, effort, and even money into this album, and I’m not making any of it back. Not bad for someone who is 100% BROKE right now.

The two songs with FINALE (one of which will be leaked after the album release as a bonus track) were recorded in my basement in Oak Par, MI. FINALE was living with me at the time and I helped him record a lot of stuff for other producers (no credit on anything). Anyways, that’s where those tracks came from.

More relevant is this new exclusive track I just got from Robin
Hannibal which some of you may remember from the interview I did with
him (http://universoulproductions.wordpress.com/2008/07/23/music-

Robin is a pretty ridiculous producer. This track is crunchy as hell
and hits hard. Give it a listen. If you dig it, post it up. More
info on this track in the post below.

2008 Hip Hop Leaders World Peace Conference brings at-risk youth, the community, celebrities, and musicians together for a common cause.

On Saturday, August 16th 1600 Avenue Inc., a 501C3 organization, and its flagship program Hip Hop Leaders (HHL) brought at-risk youth, the community, political figures, and an impressive number of celebrities, musicians, actors, and other influencers together in the name of unity, education, and a safer future for the youth.

(peace to Wes and Mike D for making the t-shirts)

The day started with intimate, powerful mentoring sessions with influential figures such as Scoop Deville, Spinderella (Salt-n-Pepa), Asya CEO of Fusicology.com, and Richard Gant (actor).

The day transitioned into a Town Hall meeting further discussing the serious challenges the youth face as well as solutions to those problems. The panel consisted of community-based celebrities like The Poetess, Sticky Fingaz, Lorenzo Murphy, 40 Glock, Ryan Ford of The Source, and Bone from “Training Day” along side community activists Donny Joubert of Nickerson Gardens, Gregory Thomas of Kush Inc., and Pastor Moses Collins of Glory Bound MBC. Together they all communed in the name of Peace and Progress.

Additionally Hip-Hop entertainers that also lent their time to this years events were: Akil (Jurassic 5), Arabian Prince (founder of NWA), DJ Mark Luv (Zulu Nation head), Paul Stewart, Porscha Coleman, Lauren London, Jackie Long, Terrence J of BET’s 106 and Park, comedian Alex Thomas, and Warren G who surprised the fans with a solo set at the end of the night under the moonlight on the UCLA Royce Hall Terrace. These influential Hip-Hop community members “gave back” by participating in a full day’s worth of “edu-tainment” to discuss issues of importance.

Hip Hop Leaders Founder Frank Satterwhite comments,

“Our hip hop leaders students as part of the year-round curriculum in schools, helped produce the HHL Conference, created a forum for victims of violence to be honored, and paid tribute to these same victims via spoken word. This is a proud moment.”

Special thanks to Media sponsors KDAY Radio, and Fusicology.com as well as the following elected officials who through their letters of support or direct involvement have spurred the HHL Program forward: U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein, Congresswoman Maxine Waters, Congresswoman Linda Sanchez, Congresswoman Laura Richardson, CA-State Senator Mark Ridley Thomas, Assembly member Warren Furutani, Assembly member Mervin Dymally, Assembly member Mike Davis , Assembly member Elect Isadore Hall, Council woman Janice Hahn, Counil member Mike Gipson, Council member Steve Bradford. 1600 Avenue Director of Community Operations Demirea Perry also specially thanks Rock Tha Vote for being in attendance to help ignite at-risk youth to “be the changed” for years to come!

ICE CUBE’S EIGHTH SOLO ALBUM “RAW FOOTAGE” DEBUTS #1 ON THE US RAP & R& B ALBUM SALES CHART, #5 ON THE TOP 200 ALBUM SALES CHART

Godfather of Gangsta Rap Dominates the Hip Hop Charts Once Again, Impressing Fans and Critics with Second Successful Independent Release Through His Own Lench Mob Records

Cube Readies for Collaboration with Director Benny Boom

for Official Second Single Video “Why Me?” Featuring

Musiq Soulchild

(Los Angeles, CA, August 27, 2008) Award Winning, Hip Hop Superstar Ice Cube does it once again with his latest music masterpiece, “Raw Footage,” landing itself at #1 on the Hip Hop/R & B charts, selling 69,234 units in its first week and #5 on overall Top 200 Album sales chart. This impressive debut is reminiscent of the success Cube had with his 2006 opus “Laugh Now, Cry Later,” which became the highest selling independent hip hop release of the year. With the month of August also marking the 20th year anniversary of the NWA debut release of “Straight Outta Compton,” Cube proves he is still the Godfather of Gangsta Rap after two decades in the game.

Rolling Stone Magazine writes of “Raw Footage,” “Cube spits some of his sharpest rhymes in years,” leaving no doubt that Cube is continuing his reign as rap’s heavy weight champion, showcasing his creative and lyrical genius throughout 16 solid tracks.”

Featuring production from Emile, DJ Crazy Toones and guest features by Young Jeezy, The Game and WC, “Raw Footage” has become a viral sensation across the internet, in part by the earlier released buzz single & video “Gangsta Rap Made Me Do It,” produced by Maestro which MTV boasted as the first great song and video of 2008. Cube recently followed up with the album’s first official single and video, “Do Ya Thang,” which was the #1 most added record at rhythmic radio, a certified banger produced by Palumbo Beats. Showing absolutely no signs of slowing down, Cube readies for the release of the album’s official second single, “Why Me?” featuring Musiq Soulchild, which will introduce a music video by famed director Benny Boom. Produced by Teak and Dee for Hallway Productionz, “Why Me?,” is a powerful song where Cube tells a story from the viewpoint of an innocent victim who faces a random act of violence, asking, “Why did I have to be one to die?”

“I made this record to talk about what is going on in the world today. We are dealing with a recession, and I know a lot of people feel helpless in a way. I consciously decided to try to give a voice to those who feel voiceless in the world,” says Ice Cube.

Currently on a national 22-city concert tour, which kicked off last Thursday in Seattle on August 20th and is scheduled to end on September 21st in New York City, Cube can be seen performing new hits off of “Raw Footage” along with classic material for die hard fans. For more information on Ice Cube and a detailed tour schedule, visit www.icecube.com or www.myspace.com/icecube.com.

His impressive musical career also includes the multi-platinum success of both his double album “War and Peace,” and hit albums “Lethal Injection,” “Bootlegs & B-Sides,” “The Predator,” and the gold certified, independently released “Laugh Now, Cry Later.” Ice Cube has sold over 10 million albums to date.
